Why do i wear this?
Why do I wear this? It's an interesting question to ask, but to understand this question, we need to understand ourselves and others around us.
To help us understand this, our faculty gave us a very interesting activity.
The activity was that we were paired with the person next to us, and we had to interact with them and understand them with the help of basic geometric shapes(line, circle, rectangle, square, triangle), but the catch was that s could only use a shape once.
So my partner for this activity was Vyshnavi; the best way to describe her would be to have too much energy stuffed in a tiny body. She's fun, energetic, sincere, and somehow chaotic and balanced at the same time.
This is my composition for her. I tried to capture the essence. Everything is very structured except the circle, as that represents her fun-loving side that somewhat over lapes with with structured figures showing the balance between the two opposite sides of her personality. The oddly placed right-angled triangle reveals her chaotic side, yet there is still structure in the chaos.
This activity helped me understand other people and how they think, including their thought processes and how their way of processing things differs from mine.
Now that we somewhat understand others, we come to ourselves
how do we understand ourselves? That is a difficult question to answer. Right?
Our faculty made us do a visualization exercise. The exercise was we needed to think about our happiest memory the visualize it, and describe it.
It was a very cool experience and exercise. So, for my happiest memory, I thought about the time I went to Uttarakhand and saw the night sky light up with a million little stars. We drove from Delhi to Uttarakhand, and slowly we reached the hilly area, then it began to get dark, and I was looking out from the window, then I looked up and saw the sky. I was mesmerised and fascinated, and just simply completely in awe of it. As coming from a place where you can barely see two stars, it was truly a magical experience.
It was dark, and the only light was there was from the cars and the sky.
People choose certain clothes for a mix of practical, psychological, cultural, and social reasons. Here’s a clear general explanation:
1. Comfort & Function
We choose clothes that suit:
-
The weather
-
Our activities
-
How comfortable we want to feel
(Example: hoodies for coziness, sportswear for movement.)
2. Personal Style
Clothing reflects:
-
Our personality
-
What we find attractive
-
What makes us feel “like ourselves”
Your taste naturally guides what you reach for.
3. Mood
How we feel affects how we dress.
Some days you want bold colors, other days something simple or soft.
4. Confidence
We often pick clothes that make us feel:
-
Confident
-
Attractive
-
Put-together
Even subconsciously, we dress to boost our self-esteem.
5. Social Influence
We’re influenced by:
-
Trends
-
Friends
-
Celebrities
-
Social media
-
What people around us wear
Fashion is partly a social language.
6. Cultural Norms
Clothes can reflect:
-
Traditions
-
Religion
-
Family expectations
-
Regional styles
Culture shapes what we consider “normal” or appropriate.
We dress based on context:
-
College
-
Work Parties
-
Festivals
-
Formal events
Different situations require different styles.
8. Identity & Self-expression
Clothing helps us express:
-
Age
-
Interests
-
Attitude
-
Aesthetic preferences
It’s a way of saying “this is me.”
